Australian Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus macrocarpa, Mottlecah) has evolved waxy, multi-scale leaf surfaces that repel water and create rolling “water marbles” which sweep away both oily and water-based contaminants. By studying its micro- and nano-structured bumps and tubular wax features, this project explores how structured surface chemistry and topography can enable gentle, self-cleaning behavior without harsh treatments.

Working through a collaborative Biology-to-Design process, it moves from these biological strategies to a range of potential applications—culminating in an early concept for artificial skin inspired by the plant’s cleaning logic.
